At the Shield the Child Foundation, we believe that the true measure of a community is how it treats its most vulnerable members. For too long, the silence surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) has allowed abuse to thrive. Today, we are taking a monumental step toward breaking that silence forever.
It is our profound honor to announce that the Shield the Child Foundation has officially partnered with the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice for the 2026 Gender-Based Violence Awareness Month.
A Renewed Commitment to Justice
Recently, our founder had the privilege of attending the official flag-off ceremony for the June 2026 GBV Awareness Month in Uyo. The event, themed “Implementing the AKS VAPP Law: From Awareness to Action,” was more than a ceremony—it was a call to arms for every advocate, survivor, and citizen.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom (SAN), shared a powerful truth: the rise in reported cases over the past six years is evidence that the silence is finally breaking.
As public confidence in the justice system grows, survivors are coming forward, choosing hope over stigma.
Building a Concrete Structure for Protection
The State’s commitment to enforcing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law is now more visible than ever. From the establishment of a dedicated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Department to the creation of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) that provide free medical and psychosocial services, the infrastructure for protection is in place.
However, structures only work when they are used. As an organization, our role is to act as the bridge between these systems and the grassroots communities that need them most. We are committed to ensuring that every child and youth understands that there is a safety net built specifically for them.
Your Voice is the Most Powerful Tool
The attorney general reminded us that justice is not final until it is felt. We want to remind every survivor and witness: it takes zero naira to speak up.
When we talk about the “Silent Struggle of the Boy Child” or the protection of the girl child, we are acknowledging that the safety of our community is a collective responsibility. If you know a child or a youth suffering in silence, speak up. Your voice is the first step toward their freedom and the path to justice.
Moving Forward Together
This partnership marks the beginning of a month-long commitment to sensitizing our communities and driving behavioral change. We are taking this message directly to the people, starting with our upcoming outreach:
- Date: 4th July, 2026
- Time: 9:00 AM
- Location: Ukana Uwa Village, Essien Udim
We invite you to join us. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a community leader, you have a role to play in protecting our future.
Together, we can move from awareness to action, ensuring that every survivor feels not just heard, but healed.
Speak up. Support. Protect. Justice is within reach.
